The Griot’s Corner
Weaving Stories, Healing Trauma, Building Shalom
Welcome to The Griot’s Corner, a space dedicated to the transformative power of storytelling in healing racial trauma and fostering reconciliation. Inspired by the rich tradition of the Griot, this space highlights the importance of narratives in both personal and communal healing. Here, we explore how storytelling connects us to God, each other, and the work of justice and Shalom.
What Is a Griot?
In West African culture, the Griot is a revered storyteller, historian, musician, and keeper of the community’s collective memory. Griots serve as the guardians of tradition and identity, using their voice to bridge the past, present, and future.
Griots are:
- Bridge-Builders: Linking generations and preserving cultural wisdom.
- Healers Through Words: Using storytelling to evoke emotions, affirm resilience, and inspire hope.
- Guides to Justice and Unity: Encouraging their communities to embrace shared values and work toward collective well-being.
The Griot in the Good Neighbors Racial Healing Journey
At the heart of the Good Neighbors Racial Healing Journey is the Healing Griot, a modern storyteller and spiritual guide. Rooted in the Griot tradition, the Healing Griot plays a vital role in helping participants process racial trauma, find healing, and build relationships grounded in justice and Shalom.
The Healing Griot:
- Honors Stories as Sacred: Elevates personal narratives of pain, resilience, and hope as central to the healing process.
- Integrates Faith and Healing: Connects biblical truths with participants’ lived experiences, offering God’s redemptive perspective.
- Engages the Body: Incorporates somatic practices like breathwork and movement to help participants release trauma and reconnect with their bodies.
- Fosters Radical Hospitality: Creates a safe and welcoming environment where every voice is heard and valued.
Storytelling: Healing Our Bodies and Systems
Healing Trauma in Our Bodies
Racial trauma lives in our bodies, often as tension, chronic stress, or disconnection. Storytelling becomes a pathway for:
- Releasing Trauma: Speaking truth aloud allows the body to release pain and tension.
- Affirming Dignity: Sharing stories honors individual experiences and counters systemic silencing.
- Reconnecting with Community: Storytelling builds relational bridges, fostering trust and empathy.
Transforming Our Systems
The systems that govern our communities often perpetuate racial harm. Storytelling offers a way to:
- Expose Injustice: Narratives shine a light on inequities and call for change.
- Reimagine Relationships: Stories inspire new ways of relating that prioritize equity and dignity.
- Inspire Collective Action: Shared experiences motivate communities to pursue reconciliation and justice.
The Griot’s Blog: Weekly Stories, Practices, and Reflections
In addition to the storytelling work within the Good Neighbors Racial Healing Journey, we offer The Griot’s Blog, a weekly resource to support your journey of healing and reconciliation.
Each week, the blog will feature:
- Personal Stories: Narratives of transformation from participants, leaders, and community members.
- Scripture Reflections: Devotionals connecting the Bible to the work of racial justice and healing.
- Somatic Practices: Simple, practical exercises to engage your body in the healing process.
Example Somatic Practice: Centering Breathwork
- Find a Comfortable Position: Sit or stand with your feet grounded.
- Inhale Deeply: Take a slow breath in for 4 seconds, focusing on God’s presence.
- Pause: Hold your breath for 4 seconds, acknowledging God’s sustaining grace.
- Exhale Slowly: Breathe out for 6 seconds, releasing tension and offering your burdens to God.
- Repeat: Continue for 3–5 minutes, meditating on a scripture like “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).
